SUMMER SELECT TEAMS FOR 2013

We want to THANK all of the kids who attended Summer Select Try-Outs this Spring! We had more kids try-out this year that in ANY of the previous 5 years! The support from our AYSO families is amazing!

Most coaches will have their teams chosen before May 4th. As teams are announced, we will post them right here on the league home page.

The U12 Boys team has been chosen by coach Steve Service and is listed below with his thoughts on this years try-outs.

"Before I list off the roster, I have to THANK everyone who tried out. This year was BY FAR the hardest team I've ever had to put together in my 7 years of coaching summer teams. We had 23 kids try-out for 15 roster spots and all of them deserved to be on the team. Because we had so many kids, I did something different this year and included 3 'Practice Squad' positions to go along with our 3 Alternates. With turn-outs like we had this year, I'm REALLY excited about future teams. We may even be able to roster 2 teams if we get enough kids to try out next year! - Coach Service"

In Memorium: Emilio Funes
12/29/52 to 6/21/12

Emilio FunesEight years ago I received a call from someone I didn't understand very well.  He wanted to help me. I had just agreed to become Regional Commissioner for Region 354.  My husband, Dain, and I were going to handle this together, but needless to say, we were absolutely overwhelmed. We had no training and nobody around to help us. We needed all the help we could get.  The name of the man on the phone was Emilio Funes.  He came to our home sometime later and gave Dain and me advice on how to set teams and what it meant to run an AYSO region.  It was the start of a beautiful relationship with a beautiful Argentinian man regarding the beautiful game.

Emilio became a fixture at the fields and our home.  He helped us coach countless kids and train scores of coaches.  His skills were unmatched by anyone we have ever come in contact with through the soccer world.  We quickly told all of the kids he helped train and coach that if you were lucky enough to have Emilio pull you aside and give you one on one advice, you listened and did what he said. His advice was invaluable.  He could take an average player and make them above average.  He took average coaches and made them great coaches.  He loved the kids and the game.  He spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours of his time training and coaching with no monetary compensation.  He just loved the game and the kids.

Emilio was a very special man who devoted his life to AYSO. His knowledge and skill of soccer were unsurpassed.  Losing Emilio will leave a hole in our hearts, our Region and this world.  Region 354 has set up a Scholarship in his name to fund children who can't afford to pay registration fees.  If you would like to donate, please send donations to AYSO Region 354, P.O. Box 457, Sandy, Utah 84070 for the Emilio Funes Scholarship Fund.

Emilio we love you and we will miss your fantastic bear hugs.

- Michelle Brown

Come say your goodbyes to Emilio.  Viewing/wake/celebration, Wednesday June 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm @ Serenicare Funeral Home, 12278 Lone Peak Parkway, Draper, UT
